The thin, detailed fillaments that interwine to force a complex interplay of base colors are believed to be the surface of an expanding cloud seen edge-on. This is a massive target representing only a portion of the large Cygnus Loop, the remnants of the explosion of a star 20 times more massive than the sun around 15,000 years ago.
The Cygnus Loop is a massive structure of supercharged gas expanding rapidly from the center of a supernova in the distant past. This image captures the Veil Nebula or Witch's broom end and used a narrowband filter to enhance the detail.
The Cygnus Loop is a massive supernova remnant that emits radiation across the full electromagnetic spectrum. The broadband or visible portion is often classified as separate nebulae like NGC6960 ('The Veil Nebula' or the 'Witch's broom') and NGC6962. This is a wide field shot that captures the entire loop over 2 hours of exposure with a narrowband filter.
A brilliant star caps the veil in this delicate and beautiful nebula.
