Aurora is short for Aurora borealis or “Northern lights” in the northern hemisphere and Aurora australis or “Southern lights” in the southern hemisphere. It is caused when solar wind interacts with the earth’s magnetic fields to produce spectacular light shows.

The night of May 10th 2024 we experienced a massive geomagnetic storm, estimated by some to be one of the top three in recorded history. A massive pair of corneal mass ejections (CMEs) combined and slammed into the earth head on, pushing the magnetic ring so far south that the KP index hit 9 in Oregon. This video is all 822 frames I captured that evening in sequential order.

The Perseids in Technicolor

I set up my tripod on Agate Beach far away from the parking lot with a few goals in mind. I wanted to capture the moon as it set, the Milky Way after the moon set, and the Perseid meteor shower. Only, something was wrong with the sky. It was green! Then I realized it was another display of Northern Lights. It was quite the evening of aurora and Perseid meteors. I can't wait to share the Milky Way shot when it's ready.
