IC1396
Images
In the constellation Cepheus lies a large area of glowing cosmic dust that is silhouetted by surrounding clouds of dark dust. This region is believed to be a star-forming area using materials like the particles that make up a massive column that curls at the end like an elephant's trunk. This is a wide field view of IC1396, the Elephant's Trunk Nebula, processed from regular light and narrowband using the Optolong l-eXtreme filter.

IC1396A is the designation for the Elephant Trunk Nebula: a dense cloud of ionized gas that has been compressed into a round shape from opposing forces of a massive star and several younger stars. The larger star illuminates the edge of the cloud and provides contrast for the trunk that curls at the end of a long column of interstellar dust. It is believed this compressed gas is forming into protostars.

The best images I captured in 2023
Hold on to your hats! We're going for a ride. 2023 was a breakout year for my astrophotography as I had my first access to dark sites, refined my Milky Way technique, got closer to the moon and started working with planets, processed my first comet, made my first solar filter to take solar shots, and a lot of new and improved targets with the addition of narrowband filters.
