The star Kaus Australis (ε Sgr)
Images
I snapped this picture not realizing it contained the very distinct and recognizable scorpion rising over Cape Foulweather next to the Otter Crest Lookout. The bright star in the scorpion is Antares, which is a marker for the Rho Ophiuchi complex.

On a night I spent taking photos from a bluff in Otter Rock, Oregon, I was surprised to see the Milky Way lurking above the city lights and behind the light pollution. A single frame captured enough to show it in this picture facing almost directly south looking down the coast and past Gull Rock and the Yaquina Head Lighthouse.

I recently pointed my Samyang 12mm southeast over the glow of downtown Monroe to capture a time lapse from dusk until dawn. The Milky Way even lurks over bright downtown Monroe, if you know how to find it.

The Milky Way viewed from a fire tower lookout
During the trek up a 1-mile, 1,200-foot fire service road to reach the lookout, we encountered thunder (but not lightning), a black bear, storm clouds and more. However, later that evening the skies clear and this happened. After verifying the Milky Way was visible with my 12mm lens, I decided to switch to the 50mm lens.
